Research-assistant position: "Development of Bioassays for Measuring Nanoparticle - Protein interactions" (100%)

The Biozentrum of the University of Basel, Switzerland is one of the leading institutes worldwide for molecular and biomedical basic research and teaching. Research at the Biozentrum focuses on the areas of Cell Growth & Development, Infection Biology, Neurobiology, Structural Biology & Biophysics and Computational & Systems Biology. With its more than 550 employees, the Biozentrum is the largest department at the University of Basel’s Faculty of Science.

We are offering a 1-year research-assistant position on the topic of “Development of Bioassays for Measuring Nanoparticle - protein interactions” in the research group of Prof. Torsten Schwede. This project is embedded within the Nanoscreen Consortium, an excellent international collaborative network of industrial and academic partners in engineered nanomaterials design, production, characterization, in vitro testing and measurement-science.

Your responsibilities

The goal of this specific research project is the investigation of binding mechanisms of proteins to nanoparticles of different materials and sizes. You will produce recombinant proteins and develop analytical tools to study protein-nanoparticle interactions systematically. Some of your analytical work will be carried out in specialized partner-laboratories around Switzerland. The aim of the study is to correlate the nanoparticle interaction patterns in vitro with bio-responses observed within the consortium. This work is expected to contribute to predictive nanotoxicology, with numerous potential applications in the design of novel nanomaterials.

Your profile

Applicants should have very strong practical research experience, particularly in protein biochemistry and bio-analytics, including developing ELISA or similar assays. Attention to detail, a systematic & self-organized working style, motivation to take on new challenges, good team-working and communication skills are essential for this collaborative project.

The workplace

The Schwede group is renowned for SWISS-MODEL (, a widely used automated protein structure homology-modelling server. The molecular modelling activities of the group are complemented with a well-equipped experimental laboratory at the Biozentrum, where most of the work will be performed.
